1984 O'Connell & Son Ink Series 1 Variations
There are two variations in Series 1. The first is the "White Highlight Variation". If you look at the Pete Rose on the left, you'll notice the name in plain black text while the Pete Rose on the right has the name highlighted in white. I believe this was introduced in 1991 after all seven series were completed and T.S. O'Connell decided to print entire sets. The white highlighting technique was used in later series, so I think he wanted to incorporate it in the first series as well. The Rickey Henderson and Wade Boggs were printed in green in the original series, but in the reprint it seems that the white highlight was used on the card and the background color was changed. All of the cards with a "White Highlight Variation" had an original red background except the Henderson and Boggs. My theory is that the other green cards were not modified because he still had alot of them from the originally printing whereas alot of the Hendersons and Boggs from the original printing were sold as singles.
The other variation is the "B&W Variation", where instead of a colored background it is simplyblack and white. The four verified players with this veriation are Darryl Strawberry, Dale Murphy, George Brett, and Nolan Ryan though there may be others.
